Tie Dye Diva Mermaid Maxi Skirt

If you're after a quick sew, with a finished product that is absolutely stunning, then the Mermaid Maxi by Tie Dye Diva is what you need.

The skirt is a lovely, maxi length, available in two styles. The straight version (with option for one or more splits)

And the mermaid version - with a pinch in at the knee and gorgeous flare to finish.

The skirt also has two pocket options. A flat pocket, or a gathered version. The pocket is nice and roomy - big enough for a phone and car keys.  In the straight version, I reversed the fabric at the pocket, for a tone on tone effect.

Fabric recommendations are knits with 50% or more stretch. The maroon version is in ITY. For the mermaid version I branched out with a scuba knit. While I was sewing it up, I did have a few moments of doubt .... Was the fabric too light coloured? Is the print too bold? But as soon as I tried it on and had a 'swish' I was thrilled with my new skirt.

If you're short like me, the straight version of the skirt can be sewed up with about a meter of fabric (if you've got a nice, wide cut)!  Adjusting length is pretty easy on the straight skirt, and there are comprehensive instructions for shortening the mermaid flare version.  For mine, I tapered down a size from the hip to the waist (to accommodate my generous hips).

The pattern is well constructed, with plenty of notches to help align the pattern pieces. My top tip is to make sure that you pay attention to the different shape of the notches. I thought I had it under control, but managed to sew the sides of the front to the wrong sides.

If you avoid rookie mistakes like that, this skirt is a quick sew. In fact, if you've never sewn with knits before, or sewn a garment for yourself, it's a great starting point. Of course, Jen still manages to pull out some great techniques that give an amazing finish.

Mermaid of straight, this is a skirt with a lot of style. The pattern covers sizes 0 to 24 - hip measurements of 34" to 55".  Grab a copy quickly, while it's on sale (finishes Thursday).

  1. I love these! I really want to try the mermaid version - not sure if it agrees with my body shape, lol, but it's just so pretty. I think your bold print was a wonderful choice.
